Circle of Reading

About This Project

The Circle of Reading

Круг чтения (Circle of Reading) is a collection of daily readings compiled by Leo Tolstoy between 1904 and 1908. Originally published in Russian in 1906, it represents Tolstoy's attempt to distill the wisdom of the world's great thinkers into a year-long course of spiritual and moral education.

The work draws from an extraordinary range of sources: ancient philosophers (Epictetus, Marcus Aurelius, Seneca), religious texts (the Gospels, the Tao Te Ching, Buddhist sutras), and modern thinkers (Emerson, Thoreau, Ruskin, Schopenhauer). Tolstoy also included his own writings, often adapting or condensing them for this collection.

Each day's reading is organized around a theme—love, death, labor, reason, faith, non-violence—with short passages from multiple authors followed by Tolstoy's own reflections. The weekly readings presented here are the longer essays that conclude each week, offering deeper explorations of these themes.

This Translation

The translations presented here are based on the Jubilee Edition (Полное собрание сочинений, 1928–1958), the definitive 90-volume scholarly edition of Tolstoy's complete works. The Circle of Reading appears in volumes 41–42.

The Jubilee Edition restores material that was censored from the original 1906 publication, including Tolstoy's critiques of the Orthodox Church and the Russian state. These translations aim to present the complete, uncensored text in clear, contemporary English while preserving Tolstoy's distinctive voice.
